ABclonal Technology Cystatin C Rabbit mAb
This gene belongs to the cystatin superfamily, which includes proteins with cystatin-like sequences, some of which inhibit cysteine proteases. It encodes the most abundant extracellular cysteine protease inhibitor, widely expressed and present at high levels in body fluids. Located in the chromosome 20 cystatin locus, it plays a protective role in various tissues. A mutation in this gene is linked to amyloid angiopathy, and its expression is reduced in atherosclerotic and aneurysmal aortic lesions, implicating it in vascular disease. It also has antimicrobial activity, including inhibition of herpes simplex virus replication. Multiple transcript variants encode the same protein.
